Protea Chemicals expands into Africa through new Namibian operation

Protea Chemicals, the Chemicals Division of the Omnia Group, today announced the successful launch of its new Mining Chemicals warehousing hub facility in Walvis Bay, Namibia. The warehousing hub will serve to oversee and co-ordinate its operations in Namibia and surrounding regions, and is in line with the Omnia Group’s commitment to expansion into the African continent.

The Namibian facility represents an expansion of the Mining Chemicals business into an extensive warehousing and distribution hub, complete with bulk and break-bulk chemical handling, debagging and tanker loading infrastructure at a total cost of N$17 million, and also provides Port access through the trans-Caprivi corridor into Zambia and the central African regions. Chemical supply contracts have already been secured with a number of key mining companies in Namibia, including Langer Heinrich Uranium, the first Namibian uranium mine for Australia-based Paladin Resources.

The Mining Chemicals business will be delivering its Protea Process™ service offering to the mining industry in Namibia and surrounding regions, which goes beyond chemical warehousing and chemical storage management, by providing a full suite of chemicals to customer sites, complemented with chemicals logistics, handling and transportation, the supply of chemical storage, make-up and dosing installations, and the on-site make-up and dosing of chemicals to the points of consumption to customer specifications. Protea Process™ is backed up with in-house design and engineering capability for customers’ chemical plant requirements.

Commenting on the launch, Edu Cloete, the Managing Director of Protea Chemicals said: “The Namibian facility represents a significant milestone for the Mining Chemicals business, enabling us to strengthen our service offering to African countries. It also allows Protea Chemicals to take advantage of the strong mining market in these regions, particularly uranium, gold, copper, cobalt and zinc.

Looking forward, Cloete added “The establishment of our new Mining Chemicals facility runs in parallel with our vision to create customer wealth through process innovation. We look forward to delivering a better quality of diversified services to our customers through Protea Process™ and to improving our lead times and ex-stock deliveries with the new warehousing hub facility footprint. Furthermore, our presence in Namibia will enable other businesses within the Omnia Group to benefit, particularly Protea Chemicals, and Omnia’s Fertilizer and Explosives Divisions. "Omnia recognises the incredible growth potential throughout Africa, and having infrastructure and people on the ground close to our customers is essential if we are to continue to localise our activities to meet the individual markets' needs."
